Texting behind the wheel, operating MP3 players and blasting music are a few of the distractions threatening teen drivers. Here are tips to help parents ensure their new driver is safe:
GPS tools. Devices such as Alltrack USA can be purchased and fitted to any vehicle. The device reports the location and speed of the car. Some models include a “geofencing” feature that alerts parents when their teenager leaves a preset area.
Safe-driving programs. Contact your local DMV to see if driving programs are offered for teenagers new to the road. An acclaimed national program, Driver’s Edge, is free and available in some cities. (Check out driversedge.com for locations.)
Online information. Many car insurance providers have information on teen driving safety posted on their websites. Some of them, including USAA and GEICO, have complete websites devoted to safe driving for teenagers.
