Weight Loss Wake-Up Call

In April, The Doctors received a cry for help from Kim and Butch, who were concerned about the welfare of their son, Devon’s, weight. At 29 years old, he weighed 470 pounds, and said he would go to sleep wondering if he’d wake up in the morning.

“I really feel the weight issues are my fault,” Kim said. “I know the way I cook contributed to it.”

Little did Kim, 50, and Butch, 49, weighing 260 pounds and 247 pounds, respectively, know they were in for a wake-up call themselves. The Doctors performed a weight loss intervention for the entire family, so they could stop enabling each other’s unhealthy habits, and work toward a healthy lifestyle together.

The Doctors brought in personal trainer Robert Reames to work with the family for a full year, as well as one year’s worth of meals from Fresh N Lean.

Now, four months since the intervention, Devon has lost 119 pounds and is down from a size 60 to a size 48! “I definitely feel better about my future,” Devon says.

“Losing the weight has given me more energy to just feel better about myself as a person,” he says “I wake up feeling very confident. Now that I work out a lot and eat better, it’s a gift I wake up to every day.”

In the same time, Butch has lost 43 pounds, which allowed him to be taken off of his medications. “It’s better to open up a bottle of vitamins than a bottle of medication,” he says.

In April, E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork revealed that Kim’s blood pressure was 196/106, a life-threatening reading. Since losing 20 pounds, Kim’s blood pressure has decreased significantly, to a normal 128/80.

To reward Devon’s dedication and progress, Casual Male XL gives Devon brand new clothing for his new size. And, once he reaches his goal weight, several more racks of apparel await him!

“I’ll definitely reach my goal weight,” Devon says.

Skin Care Awareness

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Dr. Travis, Dr. Ordon and dermatologist Dr. Rosemarie Ingleton share tips for putting your skin first by protecting it every single day.

Simple Tips for Healthy Skin:

— Avoid the sun during peak hours.

— Eat a healthy diet.

— Try to manage your stress.

— Cleanse your skin gently, avoid using harsh soaps and limit shower time and temperature.

Erasing the Scars of the Past

How do you begin the healing process after years of physical abuse? Maria, 45, is a mother of four who has endured multiple abusive relationships, leaving her with a broken nose and missing teeth.

“I’ve been in and out of abusive relationships most of my life,” Maria says. “The men pulled my hair, broke my nose, chipped my teeth.”

After years as a victim, Maria says she realized she needed to make a change and began volunteering at Safe Passage, an organization that provides support to victims of domestic violence. “I wanted to help women in the same situations as me,” she says.

While Maria has taken the steps to heal on the inside, she says she would like to erase her scars on the outside, starting with her teeth. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Bill Dorfman steps in to fix Maria’s smile by replacing her missing teeth with implants and porcelain crowns, as well as five veneers to match the new crowns, to complete her bright, new smile.

“I haven’t smiled like this in years!” Maria says. “Looking at my smile now, it takes away the bad memories.”

While Maria is thrilled with her new teeth, she says her broken nose still reminds her of her past. Touched by Maria’s story, Plastic surgeon Dr. Drew Ordon offers to perform reconstructive surgery on Maria’s nose, as well as an abdominal reconstruction to tighten her midsection.

At Your Next Meal, Fatten Your - Wallet?

Keith Ferrazzi, author of Never Eat Alone, shares his tips and tricks for making more money.

— Never Eat Alone: Invisibility is a fate far worse than failure. Never disappear. The more connections you establish, the more opportunities you’ll have to make even more new connections. Constantly look for what you can include others in. Bring people together -- it’s good for you and them. Everyone benefits from broadening their circle of friends.

— Find Your “Blue Flame”: Your blue flame is the point where your passion and ability come together. When the flame is ignited, it becomes a powerful force in getting you where you want to go. So, spend some time really thinking about your passion. Sit down and think about what you truly love doing, what you’re good at and what you want to accomplish. Ignite that flame!

— Don’t be a Networking Jerk: Have something to offer when you speak, and offer it with sincerity. A successful networker doesn’t have a martini in one hand and a stack of business cards in another with eyes darting around the room. Listen to people, learn from them and have something to offer them.

— Find the Super Connectors: There is a reason six degrees separates us all. It’s because of those people in the world that seem to know more people than the rest of us. Personal contacts are the key to opening doors, but studies show the most important people in our network are those who are acquaintances.

— Learn the art of small talk: The main thing that you have to remember is to be yourself. Throw all the rules out the window -- it will just stifle you. Start a conversation, keep it going, create a bone (a bone?) and leave with that person thinking, “I dig that person.”

— Be Interesting: Don’t leave someone thinking, “Why would I want to spend an hour eating lunch with this person?” Make room in your schedule to keep up with what’s going on in world. No one wants to spend time with someone that doesn’t have anything to say. Get out there and experience things worth talking about!

— Know Who Has Your Back: Hang around rich people. As human beings, we have mirror neurons, which basically means we will become who we associate with. Find three friends who you aspire to be like, and statistically you will have a better chance of getting rich.
