Le Smoking — Yves Saint Laurent’s 1966 femme-tailored tuxedo — is smoking hot today.
Credit a Paris YSL museum retrospective and a backlash to bareness, frills and florals — even credit the economy. “Not only is black and white a practical perennial, but you stand out in a crowd — while feeling your inner mojo,” says Tracy Taylor, U.S. editor for Net-a-Porter.com.
Take just a touch of tux with J. Crew’s pleat-front shirts and Rebecca Taylor’s bowtie belts. Then finish the look with leather leggings, sparkly clutch or scarlet lips, Taylor says.
Subvert even grand affairs — like Jason Wu’s black-edged, cropped white tux (shown) — with ribbon bowtie or inverted cummerbund. Tuck away formal tux tradition, Taylor says: “Better to Google and be inspired by Bianca Jagger, Kate Moss or Patti Smith. That’s how to wear a tux now.”
