After 94 movies and counting (according to imdb.com) in 74 years, Morgan Freeman can add yet another credit to his bio when he receives the Cecil B. DeMille Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.
Here’s more you may not know about the award-winning actor:
He's a realist.
“I don’t feel iconic,” he told us. “Part of the trick of survival in this business is to learn which part of you is you and which part of you is image.”
He's not wowed by his famous co-stars.
“I’m a bit starstruck, although I’m pretty much over my fascination. It used to get in my way, but it doesn’t any more.”
He has a son, Alfonso Freeman, 52, also an actor.
“When I was watching [his Oscar-nominated 1994 movie] The Shawshank Redemption on TV, I said, ‘Gosh, I look exactly like my son.’”
He likes to escape.
“As soon as I had enough money, I bought a boat. That was 37 years ago, and it was a 28-foot sloop. Now I’m on my fourth one, a 44 footer. When I’m on the boat, I can’t be reached. I’ve dropped off the edge of the Earth. At sea, I really depend on me. When it’s rough or ugly, or even scary and terrifying, all the other things drop away.”
He used to be poor.
“In 1965 I was in New York trying to get work as a dancer. I lived in an artists’ compound. My [annual] income was about $2,500.”
