Now Isaac Mizrahi, 50, is a judge on Project Runway: All-Stars (Thursdays, 9 p.m. ET, Lifetime).
We asked the eponymous style maven to share some of his savvy style tips — and more.
Buy only what you love.
“I am in the fashion business and I encourage people to buy clothes. But I don’t like buying stuff you’re never going to use or you’re not sure about.”
Don a hat.
If you want to buy something new, get a “little cocktail hat,” Mizrahi advises the ladies. Why? “I don’t know how many people are going to be able to afford a vacation this year, and so you’re going to have to please some part of your libido.”
Just say no to skinny ties.
He tells guys, “They make fat people look really fat and skinny people look really fat.”
Lose "giant" shoes.
“I understand that you want to be tall. But not with a short tight skirt or dress. Enough with that already. I love high heels, don’t get me wrong; I’m talking about those thick platform shoes. I denied their existence for a good eight years. Now you can just turn away.”
“My favorite trend — that I’ve been waiting for — is gray replacing black. I love gray with color.”
But black is back. (Again.)
“Black is coming for next spring; it’s always good if you want to look smaller.”
Be a little late.
“I don’t worry as much about being late. Today I was seven minutes late for lunch. I’m too old to be worried about seven minutes.”
