If breakouts dot your body, you don’t have to hide under a turtleneck. Try these clear-skin tips from Jeffrey R. LaDuca, president of Reflections Dermatology & Psoriasis Center, Auburn and Skaneateles, N.Y.
Stress less. The stress hormon cortisol “stimulates sweat and oil production to aggravate breakouts,” LaDuca says. To lower levels, get at least seven hours of sleep and cut back on simple carbs and sugar that boost inflammation.
Suds up. Shower right after exercising. Many over-the-counter body washes and lotions contain benzoyl peroxide or salicyclic or alpha hydroxy acids to help banish breakouts.
Go natural. Research finds that tea tree oil may help clear a breakout. Use it as a spot treatment for pimples: Apply one drop tea tree oil diluted with equal parts water using a cotton ball, morning and night.
See a doc. Topical antibiotics include clindamycin, erythromycin, dapsone or benzoyl peroxide. Your doctor may also prescribe oral antibiotics.
