While most audiences know him from the movies Field of Dreams, Silverado, Dances With Wolves or The Bodyguard, Oscar-winning actor and all-American guy’s-guy Kevin Costner also moonlights as a country rocker with his band, Modern West.

The group is on tour and working on a concept record inspired by the History Channel miniseries Hatfields & McCoys , premiering Memorial Day and starring Costner and Bill Paxton. The band’s song Angels Came Down is being used by the Army’s Gold Star Wives and Gold Star Moms to help with the loss of military loved ones.

Costner, 57, took a break from writing tunes to talk about parenting, keeping in touch with the family and remembering his friend Whitney Houston:

Staying connected: Music keeps him on the road, and Costner filmed Hatfields all the way in Romania. He uses Skype to keep in touch with his wife and kids, although the first time was a litle hairy. “Suddenly I’m there and my 3-year-old’s really happy, and then all of a sudden I started disappearing like Star Trek. I saw the pain on his face. It was pretty traumatic.”

He will always love her: Costner gave a heartwarming eulogy at Houston’s funeral. He referenced how they both grew up around a church choir but he never got a chance to sing with Houston. “I was kind of embarrassed to sing with her,” he says with a chuckle.

Keeping positive: A history buff, Costner says America isn’t as hopeful a place as it has been. “It doesn’t mean I give up. When you feel hope, there’s something solid about that, even though it is ethereal.”
