Summer party season is in high gear, so resist that urge to recycle your little black dress. “In the past, it seemed as if the clothes were designed for just one type of woman. Now there is something for everyone,” says David Zyla, Emmy Award-winning celebrity stylist and author of The Color of Style. Zyla shares his fashion tips on trends that will turn heads.

“The boatneck is the most important trend because it’s a portrait neckline that frames the face beautifully,” Zyla says. The classic cut is a nod to Mad Men style, and while it flatters everyone, it looks best on a woman with oval features.

Wear it with:
- Diamond, aquamarine or emerald studs
- A tennis bracelet
- Pumps with a low-contrast metallic toe for a hint of glitz

Designers who do it best: Monique Lhuillier, Galliano

“This was popular last year — and it’s still going strong, only now it’s more carefree and theatrical,” Zyla says. The new shoulder style is wider and has architectural details like pleats to give the dress greater dimension. This trend is loaded with sex appeal and is for a woman who likes to make an entrance.

Wear it with:
- Dangling earrings
- A cuff on the opposite arm of the one shoulder
- Wide-braided sandals in a metallic shade

Designers who do it best: Vivienne Westwood, Lanvin

“There is something wonderfully feminine, nostalgic and a little playful about wearing lace at a cocktail party,” Zyla says. The color palette spans nude (beige), neutral (midnight blue) and neon (tangerine and hot pink). The patterns are more modern, too, and move beyond flowers to geometrics. But pay attention to detail. “If the repeat of the pattern is bigger than your hand, it’s too large for your figure,” Zyla advises.

Wear it with:
- Pearl studs
- A cocktail ring
- Pointy pumps in the same color family of the dress

Designers do it best: Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, Elie Saab

“There is nothing practical about a peplum, and that’s the point. It’s a fun party dress that flutters when you walk and dance,” he says. Have no fear: The cut is draped downward to flatter your waist and lengthen your torso.

Wear it with:
- Dramatic accessories such as angular earrings or elongated triangles
- A collection of bangles
- Bold heels in a surprising mismatched color

Designers who do it best: Jason Wu, Badgley Mischka

“I don’t think anything says ‘I’m the life of the party’ better than a fringe dress. No woman can stand still when she wears it,” says Zyla. “With fringe, you want to see what’s underneath when the layers move. A fitted [under] dress makes it much more sexy,” says Zyla. Choose from gunmetal shades, pale golds and romantic pastels like lemon ice and dusty pink.

Wear it with:
- Minimal accessories
- Diamond studs to pick up the glint if you are wearing a metallic dress
- Transparent or nude-colored peep-toe pumps

Designers who do it best: Moschino, Alberta Ferretti, Nina Ricci
