Climate and culture are factors when deciding where to live, but what about a city’s sobriety? For those in recovery, “having a community and support around you is vital,” says Mike Guy, editorial director of The Fix, an addiction and recovery website.
The Fix’s Top 10 Sober Cities list was developed with that in mind. Here they are:
1. Los Angeles.
The city tops the list thanks to its high number of treatment centers and a strong focus on healthy, sober activities, such as yoga. “Your time isn’t as occupied getting screwed up,” Guy said. “Building that new community of friends is pretty important, and fellowship is a pretty big part of that.”
2. Delray Beach, Fla.
Retirees energize this recovery community, Guy says, who wasn’t familiar with the prevalent recovery culture of the area. The city offers a range of programs, such as recovery radio shows and a recovery motorcycle club.
3. New York City.
With the most AA meetings in the world — 4,000 a week — the Big Apple also has a big recovery population. Big drinking towns tend to have a pretty big community of people in recovery,” Guy says.
Sober “clubhouses” in this Texas city offer an all-day safe haven for addicts to attend meetings and spend time with others in recovery.
5. San Francisco
The bay area features a high number of AA meetings, with many tailored to gay men and lesbians.
While Boston is often known for its drinking culture, 1,000 AA meetings a week show sobriety is important to the city as well.
7. Prescott, AZ
High levels of addiction in this city contributed to the large recovery community found there today. Recovery facilities are numerous.
With the average Nashville citizen consuming only 8.92 drinks a week, according to The Daily Beast, the low levels of drinking combined with high levels of music fellowship make this city appealing for those in recovery.
9. Minneapolis, MN
This city offers sober high schools and the Hazelden Foundation, a prominent addiction treatment center.
10. Burlington, VT
The founders of AA hail from this city, which provides 300 meetings a week and a multitude of outdoor activities to help ease recovery.
