Want a fast change? Reinvent your look with a new jacket for fall. Esther Shin, fashion editor at Amazon.com, offers six trends.
Untraditional trench. The buttoned-up khaki classic appears in “bold new colors and deconstructed designs that experiment with shape and proportion: Coats are cropped to above the knee, collars stand up or are oversized,” Shin says. Wear with simple staples such as clean denim and pumps.
Color. Go for ruby reds, brown, navy and mossy greens. The fit: close to the body. “It’s not like spring/summer’s bright-on-bright looks. Now, you want to wear a standout colored jacket with neutrals, or wear the color head-to-toe.” Pair with skinny jeans.
The motorcycle jacket. The color trend has also spread to the coolest of coats — the motorcycle jacket. Look for moto jackets in heritage brown, oxblood red, and rich, earthy tones. An expanded palette makes the jacket even more versatile because you can wear these shades through spring. “It’s a bit tough-looking, but since the shape is familiar, anyone can incorporate it into her wardrobe,” Shin says. Wear it with floaty dresses and skirts — the edginess is a great counterpoint to the femininity.
Bomber. The tough bad boy is much sweeter this fall. Look for pretty patterns, lightweight fabrics and delicate details such as sashes at the collar or even knit panels on the side. This new tender take is so darling, you may be tempted to swap out your tried-and-true cardigan for a bomber. Wear it with a pencil skirt and heels.
Printed wool. The look is “big plaids and buffalo checks, horizontal ombré stripes, and patterns seriously reminiscent of blankets,” Shin says. It’s OK to mix patterns in the same color family or in very different scales. For instance, pair a striped shirt with a plaid coat in similar tones, or wear a small floral-print dress with an oversize herringbone coat. Wear a belt to create an hourglass shape.
