When I was growing up, every year at the holidays my parents would adopt a needy family through our church. We would all go shopping to pick out presents for them, then weíd make a whole Christmas dinner and pack it all in the back of my Dadís truck. I remember how exciting it was driving down to deliver it, knowing we were coming with this big surprise.

Making your children aware that there are others in need and that we have a responsibility to them is such a valuable lesson. Iím so grateful to my parents for instilling it in me.

Iím now proud to be a part of the Today showís annual toy drive, which raised $35 million worth of donations to needy kids last year. Talk about the holiday spirit! But I love the idea that itís not just about the children who receive the gifts, but also the children who are growing up learning about the importance of giving. When people are watching the Today show with their kids, seeing the toy donations can spark a conversation about the less fortunate. Thereís this huge multiplier effect.

This is a time in our country when there is a lot of need and hardship. Even small things can make such a huge difference in a personís life. I guarantee if you spend some time volunteering on Make A Difference Day, you will never be sorry you did. What your mom always told you is true: It really is better to give than to receive.
