Ask the legendary Spanish tenor Placido Domingo which music he’d want if stranded on a desert island, and you’ll get surprising diversity of genres and generations. “What all of these performers have in common is great passion for their work,” says Domingo, 61. Of course, you’ll also want to make room for his newest album, Songs, out this month. Here are the picks from the 11-time Grammy winner:

The Beatles were a phenomenon that characterized a whole era in popular music. I couldn’t choose one of their songs or even one of their albums: It’s the whole phenomenon that was significant.”

“To me Greatest Love of All is Whitney Houston’s best song because it emphasizes the importance of giving children all our love, to make them able to find what’s best in themselves. She was an enormously gifted performer with a voice that could be both powerful and subtle.”

“When my voice was a little lighter than it is now, I sang the leading tenor role of Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca well over 200 times, so I say that this 1953 recording of the opera is a real classic. Three great singers – Maria Callas in the title role, Giuseppe Di Stefano as Cavaradossi and Tito Gobbi as Scarpia, the bad guy – perform with tremendous passion under the baton of Victor De Sabata, an outstanding conductor. For opera lovers, this is a not-to-be-missed performance.”

Enrico Caruso remains the most famous tenor in history. Every one of us who has come after him has listened to and admired his recordings, and even though those recordings were made under primitive conditions, the beauty of his voice shines through.”
