Eating all the “right” foods but your weight won’t budge? Despite their healthy rep, “right” foods such as salmon, Greek yogurt or oatmeal can cause health problems in people whose bodies can’t process them properly. This leads to low-grade inflammation, which can bring on allergies, constipation, migraines and other ailments, including weight gain, says Lyn-Genet Recitas, a holistic nutritionist and author of The Plan: Eliminate the Surprising ‘Healthy’ Foods That Are Making You Fat — and Lose Weight Fast. Her method of assessing your diet:
Reset your system. Eating foods that work well with your body enables it to reach homeostasis, a state of internal stability. Recitas calls for a three-day cleanse by eating foods considered non- or low-reactive, such as blueberries, chicken and broccoli. Other foods are added back one-by-one to determine whether they’re problematic. “You want to test and eat the foods that you love,” she said.“If you find certain foods don’t agree with you and you have a dramatic response to something, you’ll know why,” she says.
ID your triggers. Recitas bases her plan on how clients react to certain foods. Up to 95% had problems after eating farm-raised fish, deli meats and most sushi. And 85% had reactions after eating tomato sauce, oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, salmon and bagels.
Customize your cuisine. Genetics may explain why some people can digest dairy or quinoa easily while others can’t, Recitas says. Knowing which foods work best with your body can help you get ailments and weight under control. “When people came to me and ate this way, they started to notice that their health issues were rapidly changing for the better,” said Recitas. “The added benefit is that you lose a ton of weight.”
