About this unique Obama image
Robert Silvers combined approximately 2,300 unique photographs to create the Jan. 18-20, 2013, cover of President Barack Obama.
“Photomosaic is a process I invented while a graduate student at MIT Media Laboratory,” Silvers says. “I arrange photographs into a mosaic so when viewed from a distance they all come together to form an image of something else.”
Silvers used photos of people from all different ethnic backgrounds that are pulled from his collection of thousands of stock photos. Duplicates are used but are never adjacent to each other.
“When choosing an image to replicate I look for a strong image that is clear and can convey the emotion you want to put into the image of the subject,” he says. “Photomosaic was my graduate thesis, which I patented it and turned into a business.”
