Lenny Kravitz, 49, never planned to be an actor, yet he has starred in some noteworthy films, including The Butler, which opened this weekend. He and Forest Whitaker play White House butlers who serve eight administrations.

“I end up looking like a very old man,” Kravitz says. “It’s based on a true story and is an important part of our history. These butlers saw and heard everything because they were right there, serving, when major events were going on.”

Kravitz also is working on a new, as-yet-untitled album, due next spring. “It’s a very stripped-down, lean, rock ’n’ roll record,” he says.

“What I like about acting is that it’s not all about me. In my music, I’m in complete control. I write, produce, arrange and play the drums, bass, guitar and keyboard. It’s all me. Acting is about a character and a director’s vision. My whole thing is to treat it with the respect it deserves.”

Kravitz has recently taken up photography and is preparing a show for next year. He runs Kravitz Design Inc., which designs hotels and furniture. And in his spare time he is working on a script.

“Every day I have something to look forward to,” he says. “I don’t count the years. People look at me and think I’m 30.”
