Fall TV Preview: 'Mom': Anna Faris and Allison Janney team up for Faris' TV series debut and Janney's return as a quarrelling mother-daughter duo in Mom. The two give an introduction to the new series.

Allison Janney, 53, specializes in playing oddballs. “What I love most about these women is what’s underneath, what makes them be like that,” she says.

“I have a tendency to be incredibly shy and quiet and not talk very much, especially as I get older,” she says, so she welcomed the chance to play someone like herself in Touchy Feely, now in theaters. “My character is very grounded and is the one at peace and happy with where she is in life.”

In her new CBS comedy, Mom, Janney’s character is trying to be sober. In Showtime’s Masters of Sex, she plays a “repressed woman trapped in 1950s mores. I won’t say no to any character if I like the writing and people doing it.”
