I’m so happy to be back in a sitcom,” Hayes, 43, says of Sean Saves the World, premiering Oct. 3 on NBC. “With this show, I felt I could say something about parenting and being a single gay man.” (Samantha Isler plays his daughter.)

Hayes is not drawing from personal experience: His own father was not a steady presence in his life, and he has no children. “I always said I want to want kids,” the unmarried actor says. “I haven’t ruled it out, but this is a way to fulfill that fantasy.”

Hayes and his TV counterpart do share one key similarity. “I like to try to be in control, which is the opposite of Will & Grace‘s Jack McFarland,” Hayes says. “A lot of people look to Sean to be the responsible one in Sean Saves the World. ‘Nobody looked to Jack to take care of anything.

Plus, he gets to be one of the good guys.

“In the press and everyday life, we see dads who are incapable or absent,” he says. “You never hear about dads doing well.”

A mini-mogul in the TV world, Hayes also produces Hot in Cleveland, The Soul Man, Grimm and Hollywood Game Night, as well as Sean Saves the World. A fan of Soap and Three’s Company growing up, he is happy to report, “People now go to the movies only to see things they can’t see on TV, which is good for TV.”
