USA
WEEKEND in Education provides free educational materials for teachers,
geared towards middle-school and high-school students. The four page guides
include two pages of teacher directed classroom activities and two pages
of take home activities for students. Please see below for the options
available to you.
Please
note: All USA WEEKEND in Education materials, including the weekly
teaching guides, require only your local newspaper in the classroom to
make the program a success. USA WEEKEND Magazine can enhance the materials,
but the educational guides do not refer students into the magazine - only
into the newspaper! Although USA WEEKEND Magazine is in the weekend edition
of your local newspaper, you can use the classroom guides with any edition
of the newspaper.
USA WEEKEND's
weekly Teacher's Guides are available free every week online or from
the
NIE coordinator at your local newspaper. The USA WEEKEND NIE program
is designed to teach students how to use the newspaper as a resource,
while
getting them involved with volunteerism in their community, through programs
such as Make A Difference Day and Most Caring Coach. A few great reasons
for you and your school to get involved are:
* All activities
address standard teaching mandates.
* The teacher's
guides combine with the local newspaper each week as a real-world teaching
tool with a smart, clean and easy-to-use design.
* Monthly
themes, such as Black History Month, Finance, and Earth Day, make it
easy
for you to use the teacher's guides and your local newspaper as weekly
teaching resources.
* Weekly
take-home activity sheets engage teachers, students and families at home
and in the classroom.
* Interactive
opportunities, including Make A Difference Day and Most Caring Coach
Awards, encourage students, teachers and families to get involved with
the community.
