Since 1992, millions of Americans have spent one day -- Make A Difference Day -- helping others. And each year, efforts that capture the spirit of this special day, the fourth Saturday of October, are chosen to receive awards so their work can continue. In the past year alone, Make A Difference Day has funneled $2.5 million to charity.

Oct. 24, 1998 almost 2 million people embarked on a simple journey: to help people in need. Result: Nearly 14 million lives were touched. Here, we celebrate the energy of every volunteer and salute 10 inspiring groups who made a difference. These 10 received $10,000 each in charitable awards from Paul Newman and were honored at the awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., April 20, 1999.

Wal-Mart, which is Make A Difference Day's retail supporter, funded thousands of projects last fall when nearly 2,300 stores gave local volunteer leaders grants for supplies and expenses. Total funding distributed: $2.2 million.

Now, Wal-Mart honors two projects from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Each of these 104 honorees receives $2,000 to benefit a charity, total state awards: $208,000.

The actor and founder of the food company Newman's Own Inc. gives $10,000 to the charities of each of the 10 Make A Difference Day Award recipients. This is Newman's fifth year as a Make A Difference Day supporter; his contributions to local charities through this day total $500,000. He will give another $100,000 to charities of participants in the next Make A Difference Day, Oct. 23.

Newman donates 100% of after-tax profits from Newman's Own to charitable and educational causes.
