Behind the pictures
USA WEEKEND again dispatched award-winning photographer Charles "Stretch" Ledford to capture the essence of the 10 Make A Difference Day national honorees. After 9,031 miles, 11 days and several lost bags and canceled flights, he shot his last images while hanging off the face of Hawaii's Diamond Head. He noted that his trip took him between separate worlds: sometimes geographic -- on the Mexican border, the difference of a mile can mean affluence or poverty for a child -- and sometimes psychological, like revisiting the doorway a homeless woman once called home.
