Four-legged volunteers who answered the call
Benton, Ark.: Hayley meets her new foster family -- (from left) Demi, Callie, Chase and Kirstie Pigue -- during a benefit for the Saline County Animal Orphanage, organized by their mom, Lara, and Ringgold Elementary.
Fond du Lac, Wis.: 39 people, 37 dogs and 1 cat from Healing Paws Pet Therapy visited 700 residents of 38 day-care centers and nursing homes -- some disguised in Halloween get-ups.
Louisville: A "Mutt March," organized by Stephanie Garcia, 15, raised $2,800 for vests and other protective gear for city police dogs.
Columbus, Ohio: The Ohio K9 Search Team carried out possibly the most unusual project to date: They returned to a state park to search for a man missing since April 2003. Ten team members and four dogs fanned out early Saturday morning; just after 11 a.m., Danner, a 7-year-old German shepherd, and his handler found the body.
Prattville, Ala.: Along with 80 human volunteers corraled by the Autauga County Humane Society, Reno, an equine member of the Alabama Mounted Search and Rescue Association, visited nursing homes and gave free rides to kids.
