State of Ohio takes the Encore Award

Each year, $10,000 goes to a former national honoree that raises the bar.

There they go again: Ohioans created a gale force of goodness as 100,000 citizens volunteered in 838 efforts statewide -- including 37 projects and 1,400 volunteers in Appalachian Ohio's neediest pockets. Nearly tripling its numbers since being named a national honoree in 2002, Ohio leads the nation in Make A Difference Day participation. Organizers: the Ohio Community Service Council; the office of first lady Hope Taft; a 42-person steering committee; and sponsors including McDonald's, Bob Evans Farms, Honda of America, Chase Home Finance and Ohio District of Kiwanis International.

The $10,000 Encore Award donated by USA WEEKEND and the Gannett Foundation will benefit Ohio Campus Compact.
