Guestbook: As the number of accidents increases, cities and states are considering legislation to restrict the use of cell phones. What do you think?

(Los Angeles, CA)

Cell phone are great but not while driving, it is to much of a distraction. It is hard enough to talk while you're at home, living in LA with its already congestive streets. It is just doumb to talk and drive, I'v seen to many accidents.

(where i am)

I THINK THAT THE CELL PHONE RESTRICTIONS ARE A JOKE AND IT IS JUST ANOTHER WAY FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOM. IF THE DRIVERS USE THE CELL PHONES RESPONSIBLY THEN THEIR SHOULD BE NO REASON WHY THEY SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED. SOME PEOPLE NEED TO USE CELL PHONES FOR THEIR JOBS, AND GIVING RESTRICTIONS ON THEM IS A LITTLE MORE THEN INCONVENIENT. IF THEIR HAPPENS TO BE AN EMERGENCY CALL COMING IN, THE DRIVER SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO TAKE IT.

(Marion, MI)

I think it is a judgement call. Those who know they cannot both drive and maintain a phone call should not do so.

Fine with me if you ban smoking in cars, or ban it period. Smokers are always flicking their ashes and butts out their windows. Rude and dangerous. The rest of your argument is flawed. Cell phone-using drivers are the most dangerous. How does listening to music distract you??? You use your cell phone for business? Fine, but don't do it while driving! That's not your office out there! We don't have to get used to it. We will get your kind off the road. PS: You spelled wireless wrong. Maybe you were typing while driving?

(San Mateo, CA)

Driving while using cell phones should definately be banned! My experience has been that the people who drive while talking on cell phones drive too slow on the freeway and too fast on the city streets. They also swerve all over, and don't use turn signals. Even the "hands-free" cell phones are bad; the people who use these get too involved in their conversations, and pay no attn to the road. I was behind a guy on a hands-free set who was waving BOTH HANDS all over while talking. The highways are not your office! You want to talk, pull over. Cell phones and their users are a public nuisance.

(NJ/Chill town)

It's not the cell phone it's the operator, I think stronger laws regarding cell phone usage while driving is due. A leading cause of death is car accidents , which are cuased by drivers on the phone. Instead of racial profiling , save a life and stop the individual who is swaying on to the the other lane, in a Mercedez Benz and on thier cell phone with their pet in their lap.

(SAC, CA)

I WANT TO BAN THE USE OF CELL PHONES IN THE THEATER. OH HECK, LETS JUST BAN THE PEOPLE WHO OWH CELL PHONES FROM THEATERS. I GOT IT, LETS JUST MAKE CELL PHONES ILLEGAL ALL THE WAY AROUND. WE USED TO DO FINE WITHOUT THEM. THEY REALLY ARE NOT NEEDED, THEY JUST CAUSE STRESS. WITH A CELL PHONE YOU NEVER HAVE ANY PERSONAL DOWN TIME. NO SANITY THERE.

(Mosinee Wisconsin)

If you ban the use of cell phones while driving then you also need to ban smoking, drinking of beverages, eating, and anything else that takes your concentration away for even a split second (maybe even music?!). I use my cell phone for business, it is not the phone it is the operator. Get used to it people, we will be using wirless communication for nearly everything within the next 10 years.

()

I live in cell phone hell, the Bay Area. Even the homeless have cell phones and alert each other to tourists in the area. At the ballpark, jerks buy a ticket to park themselves in front of you and then yack on their phones throughout the entire game to some other jerks across the stadium, ocassionally waving a program so the other jerks can see where they're sitting! Burn cellphones!

(NYC)

Cell phones are used so people with no lives can give the illusion to others' that they have one. They just show what pathetic insecure jerks they really are. Status symbol? LOL...it's more like no status at all.

(Norfolk, VA)

()

Those of you who say we should ban car radios or CD players are missing the point. People can listen to these devices without getting too distracted. However, a person who is arguing with someone on the phone is distracted and not driving safely. Some people simply can't do these two things at once. As for putting on makeup in the car, I have seen this happen only once. It is impossible to keep a steady hand while doing this. A woman can poke herself in the eye with a mascara wand or smear lipstick all over her face. I've seen many more men shaving while behind the wheel. I don't object to cell phone use while driving. However, I feel that the calls should be brief and driving should be the driver's top priority, not the other way around.

(York,Pa)

As a Comerical Truck Driver for 35 Yrs I have seen a lot of accidents caused by NOT PAYING ATENTION TO THE ROAD; No matter if it is a C B radio or A Cellar Phone. If People don't respect the Vehicle as a piece of dangers equipment instead of a joy piece then the laws are useless; I say that the phones are the best thing that has helped people that have trouble and report accidents. But there again it's not the phones that cause the problem it is the fool holding it;;; I did VOTE for the law to to keep drivers useing the phone will the vehicle is in motion;;;

(Irvine, CA)

Legislation for cell phone restrictions while driving is another example of big brother attempting to step in and snatch away another one of the freedoms we have. If your going to try and justify the restriction of phone usage while driving then you better remove stereo's, CB radios, passengers, food and every other distraction drivers deal with. Since when did people begin thinking that multi-tasking is a bad thing? It's what the human race does best!

(vernon, CT)

i think that cell phones should be banned while driving because they distract people and if the person is listening to someone on the phone they would not be able to here other cars beeping if they were i trouble. i think though, if it is an emergancy, like a accident you should be able to use the cell phone but only when you pull to the side of the road, or you stop.

(Honolulu, Hawaii)

The reason(s) why I chose to vote "Yes" is because I feel in order to have safe driving, the drivers should get hands free sets while driving so nobody gets hurt in accidents!

(Honolulu,Hawaii)

My comment on why I voted "yes" to the poll is because it can lead to accidents and it causes too much p

(Santa Fe NM)

Can't we find a way to link vehicle performance with cell phone use? One cancels the other somehow? Those whose ear is permanently attached to a cell phone should not be allowed to drive.

()

I fear the driver with a cell phone in one hand and a cigerette in the other more than I fear the driver who is intoxicated.

()

Cell phones should be allowed in cars-but if used the person using them should only be able to use them if they stop their car and call from the side of the road or from a rest area.

(Westminster Md)

Just what we need is more legislation! The only reason a law will be passed is to generate more revenues for our law makers. They see this as an opportunity to gain more funds to wave around for their re-election campaigns. Driving while taking care of an infant is dangerous. Lets ban newpapers, coffee, food, radios, makeup. The list could go on and on. What we need is a ban on legislators. Now that would make the world safer!

(MICHIGAN)

I have almost been ran off the road two times by drivers talking on cell phones. Why don't they just pull over to bull shit?

(Roseland, Va.)

I understand the motivation behind this movement but totaly disagree that it should be legislated. How about the people who try to read a map or directions while driving, put on makeup or eat on the run or talk to their fellow passengers or attend to children? I have seen parents trying to reach toys or pacifiers for babies who are sitting in a car seat in the rear. Now THAT is distracting. This all involves common sense and that cannot be legislated. Has anyone ever kept statistics on how many accidents involve food in the car? All a law will do is cause those people who talk and drive to try to hide the fact they are doing it which will make it even more dangerous.

(Central Missouri)

I agree with the other Mid-Missouri comment, and also Anywhere USA. One item, however, people who use cell phones not only in the car but in restaurants want us to think they are important. The only comment I have to add is this: They like people to see how important they are. That in itself is a joke. We know that they want other people to THINK they are important, when we really know that this is the only way they know how to get attention. And we know why they use the cell phone. They just don't get it. They aren't important. If they were one half as important as they think they are, they might be important, but usually not. As you can see, cell phone use has gotten out of hand. END IT. BAN IT except for EMERGENCIES ONLY.

(Wynantskill,)

Cell phones should be restricted by people driving cars, trucks, whatever, they are a hazard and cause accidents on the road. The people are really inconsiderate, stupid to drive and use these phones.

(MA)

It's not the product, it's the people who use them! I am for restriction of cell phones & I own one (there's a time & a place) but to make them illegal is going above & beyond. If we had an emergency call daily then no 1 would need to use over an hour a month!!!

(Apple Valley, Minnesota)

It seems that using a cell phone has become a status symbol, or an excuse for not planning. Not so long ago, 5 to 10 years, cell phone were not as prevelant as today, yet we were able to make our appointments, conduct business and build an economy that is second to none in the world. Yet, in the last few years it seems that we cannot effectively conduct business unless we have a cell phone. What happened? It is inconceivable to meet how someone can dial a phone and concentrate on driving at the same time, or how can someone drive, hold the phone and make notes at the same time - either the writing or the driving will suffer. Cell phones should be used for emergencies, if someone needs to make a call they should be required to "pull off" the road and stop.

(Arlington, VA)

According to the latest "News On Earth", use of a cell phone while driving adds the same risk of having an accident as being legally intoxicated. Unfortunately, they do not cite the published study which made this finding, and I wish they had. Research like that will speed the inevitable passage of laws, and save some grief. I agree with the person below who suggested that cell phone users are trying to look important. I agree that they are trying to "self-medicate" away a deep insecurity. And after all, the cool guy on the TV last night used a cell phone, so maybe that will work for me. As for the appropriate use of these helpful devices, well, if it is that important to make a call (short of rushing a pregnant woman to a hospital), surely you can pull over to dial.

(Philadelphia)

I for one use my cell phone when I am driving. I do not use it to chat though, only to give or receive info. Calls are at most 2 or 3 minutes. Most of my driving is done long distance on the highway. I think using a cell phone in towns or in cities is asking for trouble. When you are on the highway stuck in a traffic jam and are going to be late for an appointment, you need to make a call. My point is; use on highways is better then in towns and cities.

(Durham, NC)

Making a law against cell phone usage while driving may or may not be the answer. There are some people who are able to do it, there are some who aren't. The trick is this: WATCH YOURSELF. Watch yourself from the standpoint that if you are driving and talking on a cell phone; and you are weaving or driving very slow while you are talking on the cell phone, then get off of it until you are able to pull of somewhere to keep others out of harms way. On the other hand, if you are coordinated enough to drive, speak on the cell phone, and pay attention to what you are doing, then fine. Use your discretion. If you are MATURE mind you, because there are some immature adults, then you are able to use your discretion effectively.

(Omaha)

In most cases the cars involved in accdents will have a cell phone, so they just assume this caused the accdent. Making a law against cell Phones being used in autos Is like more gun laws they make the laws and cant inforce them and fatalites still continue to Go Up. Its a farce

(INDPLS. IND.)

IF CELL PHONE USAGE WHILE DRIVING IS TO BE PROHIBITED, THEN SO SHOULD TALKING ON A TWO WAY RADIO, LISTEN TO THE RADIO, SINGING A LONG WITH THE RADIO AND LOOKING FOR STREET NAMES AND ADDRESSES WHILE DRIVING. THEY ALL CAN BE DISTRACTING TASKS IF YOU ARE A SIMPLETON. LETS ADD ONE HAND ON THE WHEEL AS A FINEABLE VIOLATION WHILE WE ARE AT IT. PEOPLE NEED TO GROW UP AND GET SOME INTELLIGENCE ABOUT THEMSELVES. IMPROVEMENT OF MOTORS SKILLS IS ALSO DESIREABLE.

(INDPLS. IND.) (Atlanta)

No one should try to carry on a conversation on a cell phone and drive at the same time. You can't concentrate on both. It's hard enough to keep an eye on cars, light changes, directions, etc. without having to ALSO concentrate on a telephone conversation, especially if you're having a misunderstanding on the phone! This has been one of the worst things to be allowed and doesn't even make common sense!! Cell phones should be for emergencies, letting someone know if you're late, or teens letting their parents know their whereabouts. This can be done WITHOUT being in a car (unless it's a REAL EMERGENCY!!!)

()

stopping a person from using a cell phone while driving is great if you can enforced such an illegal use. There are many answer if persons are really serious.

(New York City)

It should be illegal to talk and drive. People who use their cell phones while driving are dangerous. They are also inconsiderate and lack the feelings of others. They have no repect for the other people on the road. They are the type of people who would rather blame the other driver before putting blame on their carelessness. They don't concentrate and can't foucs on that is important. Make it a law Don't drive and Talk at the same time. I don't understand people get away from phones to have some peace and quite and others can'

(Aurora, Colorado USA)

It's about time we took the offices off the road, out of the air, and removed them from the general public areas that I frequent. I'm sick and tired of real estate sales, Wall Street transaction, and all other manner of business being conducted in these areas. If you want to play golf, play golf. If you want to fly to Seattle, fly to Seattle. Please, please wait till you get there to start conducting business. The wame goes for LAPTOPS and the LikE!

()

Just what we need, more legislation. I agree that while driving, full attention is needed. You have to drive defensively to keep safe. But let's not attack only those who use the cell phones. Those who apply their make-up, eat, try to retrieve something that has fallen on the floor, drive too cautiously, etc., etc., are all out there too. Common courtesy, staying within the speed limits, and common sense is what is needed when driving!

(p'cola)

Outlaw 'em! While we're at it...no eating/drinking, no reading, no make-up applying, no radios, no talking...wear your seatbelt and a helmet! Don't speed and use your blinker. Good luck getting any of those to fly.

(Bradenton,Fla.)

I am tired of the goverment running my live and it is becoming more evident each and every day. I think you can use your cell in a safe manner and not endanger yourself and others with the proper saftey used.

(Sacramento, CA)

I would love to see people not talking on their cell phones while driving. When I see someone with one up to their ear, I stay far away from them on the roadway. I try to get in front of them so the accident they cause does not include me. However, if I have to speed to get past them, I don't choose that option, then I would be endangering others just like the cell phone users. If I can't get in front of them, I move into the slow lane until they are way out in front of me. Cell phones are such a symptom of the times. Everyone is so busy rushing, hurrying, overcommitting their time. I like slowing down my life.

(Salem OR)

This is, at the same time tough and easy to answer. Anything that reduces or impairs driving safety should be discouraged or outlawed. At the same time, people should have the right to conduct their lives as they want. When there's a conflict, governement has to step in and set suitable guidelines (the inconsiderates sure aint gonna do it...but, I'm sure YOU are not one of those!). As safety is compromised with the cell phones, there at least needs to be some restriction on their use in cars. Sorry...safety first.

(Anywhere)

Rochester, NY, I do mind my own business. However, it is inconsiderate fools like you who don't care if we have to overhear your personal conversations in movie theaters, restaurants, and other public places. You also don't care if we have to listen to your phone ring so you can show how important you are. That is what we object to. What are we supposed to do? Cover our ears while you talk? Most people who engage in conversations with others only talk loud enough for the other people with them to hear. However, cell phone users talk loudly enough for all around to hear. Unlike you, I like the freedom of not having a cell phone. This way, my time is my time and nobody bothers me when I don't want them to. Yes, I do have family and friends. I just prefer talking with them in person. The personal touch is great. You should try it sometime.

(Milford, NH)

I feel that Cell Phones distract a driver too much from the job of driving. The few times I have driven a car and used a cell phone, I almost had some sort of accident. Luckly I don't own one personally and I will only purchase one for emergency purposes. I agree with that type of use of a cell phone. I have done so at least twice myself, but either the car has been standing still or I directed the passenger to make the call.

(Exeter Pennsylvania)

My mother, my 2 yr old daughter, and I were in the car when a woman on a cell phone ran a red light and was doing 55 in a 35 zone.We almost got killed.I think if you cant be away from the phone DONT leave the office or home.People could end up dead.

(Oriental, N. C.)

Driving carefully and defensively requires the full attention of the driver...it's really a full time job and a huge responsibility. A cell phone can serve a good purpose - reporting an accident or calling for help....this should not be done while continuing to drive. Goodness, doesn't anyone else enjoy the ability to get AWAY from the phone for a while? Dating myself, but I do remember when a driver could be in trouble for driving with only one hand on the wheel! Nobody should be so "busy" that they can't be without a phone conversation for a little while.

(ME)

MY BOSS GAVE ME ONE ALONG WITH A PHONE CARD AND TOLD ME I HAD TO CARRY IT.. I TOLD HIM TO PUT IT ///// AND QUIT.

(staten Island N.Y.)

It doesn't matter if it is banned, people will still use it, like everything else thats either banned or unhealthy. Everyone feels "It would never happen to me". Personally, I must pull over to dial, I wont risk my safety or anyone elses. I would hope others would be as intelligent about it also.

(Oakland IA.)

maybe we should have to drive with the windows down so we can heaar Better, Not whear sunglasses Not drive while it is raining, and lets get real weard: maybe not drive at night, or listen to the radio, or have distracting passangers in the car. These people are out of their minds. Lets just trashcan all new technology and pass laws to please these fanatics.

(Aurora, CO)

Having observed cell phone users, make-up artists, meal eaters, bicycle tire pump users and loud music users, trying to keep in their lane of traffic is almost a disaster waiting to happen. I witnessed a volve driver smash into a 4 wheel vehicle just the other day while a cell phone was in use and trying to write a note to himself.

(Methuen, MA)

There should be a law against using anything that obstructs a driver from saftely driving a vehicle. If they are pulled over for a traffic violation and at the time of the violation. They were doing other than driving. On the phone, CB, putting make up, reading the paper. A separate ticket should be given with a very harsh fine.

(lodi N.J.)

Cell phone users should pull over to make calls and a law should be passed. I also would ban reading the newspaper,Putting on make-upand eating fast food that drivers have on their laps. Pull over on a shoulder to do these. Full attention to driving with 2 hans on the wheel.

()

(Hilo. Hawaii)

All drivers of all types of transportation should give 100% of their time to driving safely. If one needs to use a cell phone in case of an emergency, they should pull of the road or whatever before they attempt to use a cell phone.

(levittown pa)

? how many people have to die because you need a date or milk. the cell phone should be used in and emergancy(spelled right i hope) thanks by the way what are the death numbers because of cell phon

(North Bend, Wa.)

Cell phones can be a useful tool, but users should be considerate when using them. For example: 1) Using while driving is dangerous to yourself and others on the road. Pull over and STOP, when you phone. 2) Don't use them in Church, Movies, Plays, Musical events or in restraunts. 3) when you are a guest in someones house ask permission to use them or excuse yourself and go out side. Even in public places try to be considerate towards those around you. They may not want to share all the details of your life. In general, the only laws I think that should be passed are those about safety, however.(That means No Driving while using a Cell Phone)

(Richmond,Ind.)

I believe cell phones are an absolute necessity while you are in a vehicle and may need assistance for one reason or another on or off the highway. I do believe they should have restrictions to keep people from just wanting to gab .There is enough to contend with of people eating, drinking, smoking, playing the radio and applying their makeup and fixing their hair.My wife has a cell phone that she takes with her at all times. We both feel at ease this way.I wouldn't like it if she was denied use of it.

(Twin Peaks, Calif. )

cell phones are not needed for emergency vehicles because they have radios & also are not driving alone. Yes lets have a law that says no talking on the cell phone unless you are pulled over. Never at a stop light. But when you have a law you need a punishment such as taking away your cell phone for a year. If you cause an accident a heavy fine plus jail time is just great. Kill my kid & its the death penality for you bud. If the courts don't get tou legally the 72% of us will hunt you down & do it ourselves. Now that is law & order.

(NYC)

Cell phones in cars are dangerous and cell phones in public are annoying. People seem to feel the need to SHOUT into the phones to make sure everyone around them can see they're on a cell phone thinking they'll look important. But in reality, they simply look very stupid. Keep your dumb calls private idiots and keep em off the road too. God, what's next? Microchips in our ears???????

(Bayville, NJ)

I have been driving a school bus, etc. for 30 years, I seen to many people talking on Cell phones almost causing accidents. How can a person concentrate on driving while have an spat with their other half, I know I could not. If you need to talk then pull over and do so.

(Point Roberts, WA)

We already have too many laws on the books now which are NOT enforced. One of these refers to reckless driving/reckless endangerment, etc. which could be used against CARELESS cellphone users. If there's to be a law against cellphone it would also have to apply to cops, cab drivers, truckers, bus drivers and anyone who uses a two-way radio device while driving. MOST PROFESSIONAL drivers know how to do it safely but a law should not distinguish between who can or can't do it.

(Colorado)

Hands-free cell phones are just as dangerous as hand-held. Hang up and drive, idiots!

(Newark, DE)

In fourth grade, my social studies teacher taught me that YOUR RIGHTS END WHERE ANOTHER'S BEGINS. Recently, a young child was killed in a car accident by someone who failed to stop at a stop sign because he was dialing his cell phone. He ran into another person's car. The mother lived; the child died. When you decide to pick up your cell phone WHILE DRIVING, think about who else might get hurt. This man was a very careful man with children of his own. Now, he has to live with this guilt for the rest of his life. Countless times, I have had to yield to people pulling out in front of me because they failed to acknowledge other cars on the road. Most (granted, not all) of these people were on their phones, so enraptured in their conversation, they neglected to look around at their surroundings. What happened to those days when driving was relaxing, a time to get away from the stresses of the world?

(Marshall,Illiinois)

I have no problem with restrictions on cell phones, only and I say only, that the same exact restrictions apply to CB radios.I see no difference in using a CB or cell phone.Oh,by the way,it should apply to law enforcement also.

()

I think cell phones are one more of the many distractions that drivers have in their cars and should be banned unless the driver is completely stopped. People are also rude in their use of cell phones in public places. I'm not interested in other people's conversation on the phone and they should be respectful enough to get in a private area to talk on their phones.

(Daly City)

PLEASE HANG-UP!!! The child you save - for not driving recklessly, maybe your own...

(Lake Jackson, TX)

My goodness here we go again trying to get the government to regulate us even further. The problem is irresponsible and self-serving people that only care about themselves with no regard for anyone else on the road. However, what is the difference between the person using a cell phone while driving and someone reading a newspaper, shaving or applying makeup while driving. If you ban one, you should ban allÖ.

(Milton-Freewater, Or.)

My wife and I each use cell phones, but only when pulled off the road an stopped. The use of hands-free sets would be much preffered whe they absolutely must be used while driving.

(Rochester, NY)

Those who complain about cell phones in stores, restaurants, and other public places should use that energy to be thankful that cell phones are the worst thing they have to be distressed about. The issue is rudeness, not technology, and the remedy is common sense, and minding one's own business. We are all generally surrounded by the conversations of others in public circumstances. If the tone is conversational, why should it matter if a cell phone is involved? Nor do polite folks eavesdrop, even when only one side of the discussion is audible. If truly offended, one may politely request that the offender modify his/her behavior. I frequently must shout in public so that my nearly deaf elderly mother can hear simple directions, questions, and suggestions. Should we be banned from shops and eating establishments? If I am in the grocery store, and cannot remember whether we need eggs, who is harmed if I call home to inquire?

(Lynn Haven Florida)

I'm tired of being that has to try to avoid these people that run lights, cut corners, don't stay in lane, all because they are busy talking on the phone. I was behind a guy one day all the way to work at the beach, he had cell phone in one hand, and cigarette in the other hand (guess he was driving with his knees). Driving with a phone to your ear should be banned. There is nothing in our small community, that cannot wait til you reach your destination to be heard.

(Rochester, NY)

All you knee-jerk Luddites need to get over this anti-cell phone bias, and mind your own business. Wireless is the future, and cell phones have improved the lives of many, not just in the USA, but in many developing nations without installed infrastructure. My life is improved by having a cell phone, as I can call for help when required, report accidents or unsafe drivers, be reached by my family in emergencies, call ahead when delayed, etc. Unless we are prepared to ban all possible distractions in a moving car, including kids, pets, music, talk radio, consulting maps or written directions, and so on, then singling out cell phone use is not rational. Nor would it be easily enforced, which is a whole other discussion.

()

We have to let people be responsible for their actions. What is next making shaving and putting makeup on while driving illegal? Those actions are surely more distracting and dangerous

(Burlington VT)

Several lives could be saved if cell phones are not allowed while driving a vehicle. Some drivers are too careless as it is now. Some people use it for chatting only. Also annoying when used in public.

(Poughkeepsie, NY)

As an On-Call Service Manager, I need a cell phone at all times. My answering service can only reach me by pager, so that I can pull off the road to use my cell phone. I have seen too many people on their phones totally oblivious to the traffic situations around them. Yes, ban cell phone use by drivers, unless they are hands free (and voice activated to dial out!!)

()

Citizens of most civilized societies accept the truism that total individual freedom must be limited by government when that "freedom" is known to put at risk the lives or property of others. We accept the laws that prohibit passengers in taxis, buses and other forms of public transit from talking to the driver. This is because defensive driving -- the only kind that keeps tragic accidents as low as they are -- requires total concentration on the road ahead and behind and along side. Errors of judgment and failure to react to danger are functions of the brain that result when corrective action is not taken within split-seconds. Preoccupation with a cell phone while driving a moving vehicle is the most outlandish form of risk-taking. (Berrien Spri

(Pearl City, HI)

While I agree that one-handed driving while talking on a cell phone is a hazard to the driver and everyone around him or her, I think a complete ban goes too far. Why not just mandate the use of hands-free ear pieces instead? Let's not over-legislate this problem.

(Altoona, PA)

I think that cell phones are ok to use if they are the hands free type. That is just like talking to a person in the car with you. But if they are the kind to hold they should be banned. You absolutely cannot concentrate on driving if you are trying to hold a phone and navigate the road at the same time. I've been almost hit by many people.

()

Maybe they shouldn't be banned completely. I do think it is a hazard to drive while talking on the phone, your concentration has to be in 1 place or the other. I do a lot of driving and I see people doing all kinds of stuff from putting on make-up, shaving, etc and I can't tell you how many times they have almost caused an accident because they weren't focused on the road. If a call is that important than pull over and make the call and then get back on the road.

(Daytona Beach, Florida)

If you can't drive and talk on a cell phone what are you doing behind the wheel in the first place. If we have our gov't ban everything somebody dosen't like EVERYTHING WOULD BE ILLEGAL. I have zero tolerance for people who want to tell everybody else how to live thier lives. Find something else to complain about, like the high price of gasoline or the raising of interest rates that will hurt us all. Keep gov't out of our lives at all cost! Our freedom depends on it!

WHEN WILL WE LEARN THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT OUR DADDY AND SHOULD NOT BE SETTING RULES AND REGS FOR EVERY LITTLE THING IN OUR LIVES. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL FIND SOLUTIONS TO THIER PROBLEMS IF THE GOVERNMENT JUST GETS OUT OF THIER WAY. LET THE GOVERNMENT DO THIER JOB: NATIONAL SECURITY AND INFASTRUCTURE-THATS ABOUT IT. THE REST IS UP TO US. BE RESPONSIBLE, DON'T WALK AROUND WITH YOUR HAND OUT OR YOUR THUMB IN YOUR MOUTH.

(lynchburg, va)

virtually everytime the govt. tries to regulate anything it ends in disastrous results for freedom in america

(Honolulu, HI)

As an Itinerant teacher I spend a lot of time in my car, and when emergencies arise I often need to check in with my office. My cell phone is an essential part of my professional equipment, as is my car, and I would hate to think our legislators would consider taking a giant step backward by disallowing cell phone use. I have no problem, however, with restricting use, while driving, to a "hands-free" adaptor. I have one for my phone and it allows me to keep in touch with my office while driving safely. The price of the adaptor is reasonable and should be made mandatory, I feel, for any and all DriveChatting.

(Queens, NY)

All of these people using cell phones anywhere are stupid. Nothing is that important. I've had a cell phone go off in the movie theater! Maybe if they prove that they are really a health hazard as they say, then more people will stop using them. I just plain hate them. What's wrong with a public pay phone??

(El Paso, TX)

How many Small children have drowned in bath tubs, pools, etc. while the person responsible for them "only went to answer the phone, and was only away for less than a minute" if a phone call can cause an infant to drown, think what it can do at 60-70 MPH on a crowded Freeway!!

(Orlando, Fl.)

All this new electronic gadgets people walk around with these days are contributing to the dumbing down, laziness, and rudeness of the American people. It's only promoting instant gratification and causing many people to try and do 10 things at once, which ironically, doesn't save any more time for people at all.

(Sierra Vista, Az)

In my opinion cell phones should not be banned. I think the people that cause accidents and drive crazy while talking on the phone are idiots who shouldn't be driving to begin with. It's not because they are on the phone, but because they aren't responsible and they can't drive in the first place. Talking on the phone while driving is the same as talking to someone in the car with you. Are they going to have to ban talking altogether? I think it's crazy and you just have to be responsible with your cell phone.

(Ithaca, NY)

I don't think they should be banned while driving. I use a hands free and have no problems. I do think that tickets or other citations should be issued for "stupid use" of a cellphone while driving, as well as other stupid things people do while driving.

(Rochester, NY)

(Rochester, NY)

(Boulder Creek CA)

The sad reality is that it will probably take a major tragedy to overcome the lobbying $$$ and get legislation through that will prohibit driving while using a phone. And hands-free phones haven't been shown to be any safer-it's all in the distraction.

(Springfield, TN)

I'm sick of the very sight of these things! Can't people do anything anymore that isn't plastic/electric for ten minutes? :P Use should be restricted to private property or inside of the car when the car is NOT in motion!

(Whitewater, Mo.)

It should be illegal to use cell phones while driving, except in extreme emergencies. It should also be illegal to use cell phones in restaurants and other public places where they are disruptive.

(Hattiesburg, MS)

There are too many incompetent drivers, mentally and physically, on our roads and placing a cell phone in their hands while driving only compounds the danger.

(Fredonia, New York)

Cell 'phones should be used only when the car is parked. A possible exception would be if the driver believes he is being followed or harrassed by another driver or if a motorist wants to be certain that the Law Enforcement Authority asking him to pull over is authentic.

()

()

If we could only reach a happy compromise. IF IT'S SO HORRIBLY PLEASE FOR SAFETY SAKE PULL OFF THE ROAD AND MAKE YOUR IMPORTANT CALL. i'VE SEEN YOUNG MOTHERS DRIVING AND BUSY YAKKING ON THE PHONE WHILE HER DARLINGS ARE not STRAPPED IN AND CLIMBING ALL OVER THE CAR. nOT TOO SMART!! aND WOULDN'T IT BE NICEIF WHEN YOU GO TO A RESTAURANT IF THEY ASKED YOU IF YOU WANTED A PHONE TABLE OR NOT? i'M TIRED OF HEARING Zappointments being made and business deals confirmed etc, etc. Please excuse my mistakes.

(Portland, TX)

Hands free cell phones are no more dangerous than tuning a radio, reaching for a cigarette or applying makeup. Are we going to ban all of these, also? There are just too many variables to be fair about this as an inforcement is

()

I have a cell phone in my vehicle. I use it ONLY when there is a need, and then off-road. There should be no distractions when you drive and use of a cell phone is one of them.

(Lansing Michigan)

Since companys are now offering handsfree headsets for cell phones how will law enforcement be able to tell if someone is using a cell phone anyway.. we don't need any more new laws that cannot be effectively and fairly enforced.

()

To those of you who say that why should we all be punished for the acts for the few, what few are you talking about? Based on personal observations, most people I've seen using cell phones while driving are not paying full attention to their driving and other drivers around them. There are too many bad drivers out there anyway. We need to bring driver's training courses back to our high schools and make it harder to get licenses.

(Hattiesburg, MS)

There are too many incompetent drivers, mentally and physically, on our roads and placing a cell phone in their hands while driving only compounds the danger.

(Coos Bay OR)

Being passed by a car going over 100 miles per hour on I-5 wasn't scary enough, she had a cell phone in her ear and was NOT driving in her own lane. Your endangering lives and your RUDE! When your shopping or dining out leave those cell phones off. There is NO call so important that it can't wait until later. These status symbols have gotten completey out of control. Our society is becoming more self-centered and rude by misusing this great technology. Keep it for emergencies and business, not inane chit-chat.

(Toms River NJ)

If they make cell phone use illegal they should also outlaw twoway radios,am/fm radios, cassette players,CD players, talking to other occupants of the vehicle, looking at road maps/directions,etc. Most states already have laws against driving while doing such things! It's called CARELESS or WRECKLESS DRIVING !!!!!Making laws to limit the actions of everyone because of the INABILITY of a few sounds like RUSSIA or NAZI GERMANY to me!!!

(Grand Rapids Minnesota)

I think cell-phones should be banned for all uses except for emergency uses. There should be only one button for 911. This a national disgrace in mega proportions.

(Manchester, Tennessee 37355)

I do not own and have NO plans to ever use a cell phone. I have, however, seen too many instances where their use in a motor vehicle was a hazard to not only the driver using them but to other drivers as well. One extreme example: Drivers stopped at a traffic light (yes, it was RED); idiot talking on a cell phone NOT ONLY REAR-ENDED THE LAST CAR IN THE LINE, BUT WAS STILL TALKING ON THE CELL PHONE TWENTY MINUTES LATER WHEN THE POLICE FINALLY ARRIVED TO INVESTIGATE! Treat them like headphones--ban them outright!

()

I think they should be banned. There is know way a driver is in full control while chatting on a cell phone, especially with the traffic in this day and age on freeways and in towns it is worse. I have followed people talking on cell phones and they slow right down then speed up and weave all over the road. When there call is finished they go like crazy. If a call is that important then pull off the road and answer the call or make the call and we would all be safer. My life and every one else out there are more important than any dumb phone call. Orange Beach Al.

(Cartersville, GA 30120)

I don't believe people should be driving and talking on a cellphone at the same time. Prosecution/insurance cannot repair the damage/death to a person/persons due to cellphone concentration. Find a place to park and talk!

(Hilo)

I don't think using a cellphone while driving is very smart or safe, but I don't think government needs to get involved with usage. If cellphone usage causes an accident the person should be prosecuted for inattention while driving.

(Burkburnett, Tx.)

This could all be settled by a simple sensor in the phone and the car. Install a motion detecter-if the wheels are moving the phone will NOT operate? SIMPLE!!!!!

(Boise, Idaho)

I agree with the other comments made, but I would like to add that cell phones should also not be allowed in restaurants, or other places where the public gathers and is entitled to some assemblance of solitute without having to listen to some inane conversation. They are just about as much of a scourge as smoking.

(N. Dighton, Ma.)

Your mind should be on your driving and not on a conversation with someone else. With today's driving conditions, speed, congestion etc. it is imperative that we pay full attention to our driving.

(Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48301)

As an out and about observer, my guess is that 99% of car phone users are on another planet while talking, because their car driving acumen diminishes to zero. All too often they are discourteous beyond acceptable 2lst century behaviour. And there certainly seem to be no limits on how ugly people have become.

(rochester n.y.)

the only safe way to use a cell phone in a car is do not use it.

the only reason people use cell phones while driving is to make themselves feel important, or a sign of prestige..we all know they look stupid !!! no need to drive while inCELLtoxicated.

As a victim of a speeding driver talking on a cell phone 9:30 at night with no headlights, I say they should be illegal. Many a time I have watched people driving while talking on a cell phone--they make turns with no signals, they speed, they have the phone crunched between their head and shoulder--there is no way they can be concentrating on handling their vehicle let alone paying attention to the conditions of the road or the other drivers around them. If headphones are illegal, then cell phones should be unless they come as part of the vehicle mounted on the dashboard or console. Thanks

(Los Angeles)

FOLKS: Hands-free cell phones are NO safer in the car, from an accident perpective.

(Denver)

How stupid can people get? It's amazing that people are so dumb that they use a cell phone while driving, and we have to make a law against it in order for them to understand. Oh, and hand-free cell phones are just as bad, by the way. The accident rate is just as high as with the usual cell phones. Let's just include cellphone use with careless driving, and ticket the hell out of those morons!

(Chilton, Wisconsin)

Use of a cell phone while driving is just too distracting to be safe. Pulling over to make a call takes only a few minutes. I understand there are some people who are perpetually in a hurry, for whom the world would end should they take those couple of minutes to stop, but those are the people who think speeding gets them to their destination faster too. Also, there are now handless cell phones that can be used if one must call while driving so there's no further reason to use the handheld cell phones while driving anymore.

(Nevada)

I agree that the cell phone usage on the highway has caused some drivers to lose "driver attention",but those same drivers without the phone, would have other things to distract them, the radio, cigarettes, children, the list is long. The CB radio has been used for over 30 years without driver attention problems. Driver inattention has caused many accidents before cell phones were ever invented, and still to this day causes accidents in vehicles without cell phones. The government cannot regulate and control what every person does in his or her car. The advantages of cell phones far outweigh the disadvantages.

(Columbus, Ga)

Why stop a cell phones. Letís ban radios and CD players. Letís ban taking babies in a car without someone else to watch the baby. Letís ban fast food drive through. Someone may wreck while eating their Big Mack. Letís ban cigarette smoking in cars, both the driver and the passenger. We canít have second smoke bothering the driver. Letís ban passengers from talking. Letís ban rolling down the window while driving. Letís ban manual shift cars. We canít ban everything that might cause a distraction in a car so, Letís ban cars.

I think use of a cell phone in a car should be about safety. The only one I would use would be one that is voice activated and NOT held. I saw a lady years ago with the microphone mounted on her visor. There's too much going on to have one hand holding a phone and the other a steering wheel.

(lake hopatcong nj)

most of the problem is the individual that has the phone stuck their ear, driving with one hand, and cutting in and out of traffic. i have a phone, but if i need to make a call, i pull over, make my call, and get back on the road. talking on the phone while driving should be the same as careless driving, with the appropriate ticket.

(Xenia Ohio)

After reading through the previous comments it's not too hard to see that part of the problem is how immature and self-centered some of the "pro" cell phone users. Cell phones are wonderful tools for emergency situations, but they absolutely should not be used while driving down the road. Even the hands-free ones require too much attention be diverted from actually driving the car. Think about times you may have been on the phone at home and get so engrossed in your conversation that you don't know what's going on in the very same room. Ban cell phone use in moving vehicles!

(Dayton, MN)

Cell phones cause much distraction when used while driving...pull over and make the call. Most calls can wait anyway...everyone thinks they're SO important when they're on their phone...they just look stupid and stuck up.

(Bronx, N. Y.)

People who drive cars (including me) have an obligation to drive as safely as possible. There is nothing so urgent that warrants the use of a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. There is no excuse, nothing so important, for endangering other people's lives and property. If there is an emergency, one should pull over and stop the car. Unfortunately, many people choose their convenience over other's lives, so the law must step in and make the decision for them - No use of cell phones by the driver of a moving vehicle.

(Columbus, Ohio)

Cell phones may save your life someday. They come in handy for reporting accidents for which I have done several times, and even reporting reckless operationof a motor vehicle. I vote yes for cell phones in cars!

(norwich,ct.)

(Aransas Pass, TX)

I would like to see anyone using a cell phone stopped at the side of the road, instead of driving. There is nothing that urgent that can't wait.

(Illinois)

All you have to do to make your cell phone safe while driving is to use a hands free speakerphone.

(Manassas, VA)

We shouldn't have to make a law for cell phone usage. It's just common sense to pull over to use the phone; unfortunately, so many people today just don't have common sense, they're to into themselves and their wants to care about what may happen.

(High Point, North Carolina)

Cell phones are a good tool for protecting the safety of yourself and others while away from home. While driving, however, you should either get out of moving traffic or use hands-free dialing and speakerphone capabilities when using a cell phone.

(Gadsden,Alabama)

This goes back to the same ole philosophy...more laws and more regulatins! WE DO NOT need any more useless laws and regulations in this country! What we need is for people to take charge of themselves and act resposibly...without some LAW saying you have to do this or that! That is the problem in this country today.NO MORE WORTHLESS LAWS!!!!!

(Riva MD)

I think they should pull over and maake the phone call and donot use when driving in the fast lane.

(Shreveport)

There's no reason why someone can't pull over when having to make or receive an important call on his or her cell phone. Give me one good reason why someone needs to be disrtacted by a cell phone conversation while they are driving.

(Hartford, Kentucky)

The cell phone is just one more distraction we can add to the many that we have while driving...Susanne Williams, Kentucky

(Lake Oroville, CA)

Driving requires one's full attention; however, unfortunately, we seldom direct our full attention to this task. Using the cell phone, for purposes other than to obtain help in life threatening situations is clearly just an additional unjustifiable distraction, which puts everyone at risk. Like most people, I have witnessed drivers allowing their vehicles to drift off the intended driving path because the driver is busy talking on the cell phone. This is frequently observed in heavy traffic traveling at speeds of 65mph or faster. Fotunately, I have not witnessed any accidents, but only because of the alertness of other drivers. Used responsibly, the cell phone is a wonderful piece of emergency equipment and portable communications device. However, the only defendable justification for using a cell phone while driving is fear that your life is in danger by stopping the vehicle to make your call.

(clarksville, TN)

whatever happened to 2 hands on the wheel. Also what's so important it can't wait. RISKING OTHERS LIVES. Phones are so cheap that carrying one as a status symbol no longer applies. Except for emergencies I think most people that have that appendage attached to the side of their face are just tacky.

(cincinnati oh)

I can't belive that many people use cell phones I don't have one or plain to get one. I have better things to do with my money

(Louisiana)

This is how Bill Clinton and others like him make monkeys out of us. While we get all distracted and upset over something like this he , (they) get to stick it to us from our blindside. WAKE UP AMERICA ! It's true you know , there really is "nothing new under the sun". :)

(Great Falls, Mt.)

Driving a car is like having a lethal weapon, you have to be aware at all times. Using a cell phone while driving adds to the danger of that privilege. They are great to have in case of emergencies, but pull over to call. Driving drunk, putting on make-up, and using a cell phone are all in the same nuisance category. What did we do before the cell?

(Lancaster,Ohio)

You can't judge all people by a few! Cell phones can save lives, time and money. If you pull over and use it there is no problem with cell phones. They may save you or your loved ones life by someone with a cell phone stopping to help you on the side of the road. Common sense is necessary with anything today. Some don't have it! Some do! I vote "yes" for cell phones in cars. They can be a life saver in other places, also. Everyone needs to quit trying to run everyone else's life and take care of their own.

(Tulsa OK)

Too many think hands-free is safe, while conventional isn't. Actually the research shows that the accident rate for both is about the same--*approx. 4 times the average rate.* The same as for someone who's legally drunk. And there are actually people who think it's OK?! Let's get a grip, people. This isn't about Clinton, Communism, politics, Democrats, Republicans, or regulation. It's about common-sense saving of lives.

(Vidalia LA)

The whole issue is simply driver awareness and education. Using a cell phone while driving is no more distracting or dangerous than tuning the car radio, looking for your favorite CD, trying to read a road map or a book, talking on a CB, arguing with passengers, eating or trying to turn around to check your back- seat infants thanks to other so-called good ideas that were made into laws that we are forced to obey. Again I say it is about driver education and personal responsibility. I for one am sick of being penalized for other peoples irresponsibility. One vote FOR cell phones!

()

Depends on the driving conditions at the time and where your at. I would rater not see more restriction just good common sense.

(Milford, CT)

Anything that distracts a driver from the task at hand can be very dangerous to the drivers around them. It takes a certain amount of concentration to carry on a conversation especially if it might concern work or be on a topic of extreme interest to the participitant. If it is just idle gossip than why can't it wait until they are not driving. The same can be said about shaving, reading, eating, or the application of makeup while driving. In CT it is illegal to have a TV visible from the front seat. Why not have a law against the use of a phone from the drivers seat?

I have sat behind cars at red lights, and when the light turns green, they just sit there, totally engulfed with their phone conversation. I see this happening, along with inattentive driving all the time. Its time to ban the cell phone now.

(Columbus, Ohio)

My Step-daughter just totaled my car while talking on a cell phone, enough said!!

(Newark, Ohio)

No -- cell phones should not be banned while driving anymore than doing anything else while you are driving. Like sight seeing, talking, smoking a cigarette, eating. There are laws already on the books just enforce them. Whoever is the cause of an accident for what ever reason normally gets cited anyhow. Let's not bring the government in to fix everything everytime there is a flaw in the system. Not everyone is guilty of breaking the law who talks on a carphone. I have seen plenty of people talking on a carphone while driving and do not recall anyone driving recklessly anymore than if they were eating a sandwich.

(CARMEL, NEW YORK)

I THINK THE CELL PHONE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS THE WORLD HAS SEEN, NEXT TO THE COMPUTER THIS CENTURY.THE THING THAT ROADS ARE SO CONGESTED IT REALY TAKES A LOT MOR EFFORT TO DRIVE. I HAVE A PHONE MYSELF SO SPEEK FROM EXPERIENCE. TO PASS A LAW LIKE COULD ONLY SAVE LIVES.

()

Did you know that a cell phone can be a deadly device in an accident? There have been cases of people who have had their jaws broken and faces disfigured by the cell phones next to their faces in accidents. That phone is a hard device that can be rammed into your body. Think about that the next time you allow yourself to be distracted from your driving while using one.

(ANYWHERE USA)

IM WORKING ON AN IDEA WHERE YOU COULD STICK IT IN YOUR EAR AND NEVER TAKE IT OUT. I HAVE TO LAUGH AT THOSE FOOLS WITH THAT GROWING OUT OF THERE EAR WHAT A BUNCH OF FOOLS

( CONWAY, N.C.)

I AM FOR NOT USEING CELL PHONNE WHILE DRIVING AN AUTOMOBILE, PEOPLE SHOULD KEEP THEIR MIND ON DRIVING , INSTEAD OF TALKING.

(Oak Hills, California)

Most states have laws called " inattention to driving" which cover everything from cell phones to reading the newspaper while driving. The person with the hands-free cell phone should not be punished for the people who do use cell phones and don't pay attention to their driving. The cell phone is not the problem, it's the inattention to the driving that's the problem. This is just like gun control. The government wants to punish the object not the act. The act is not pay attention to your driving and that covers everything from having sex to changing your cloths while driving.

(Oakland, CA)

My..My...My.....Most of those coming out in favor of car phones are extremely rude, not to mention crude! Perhaps it isn't only their car phones that effect their driving. With or without the phone, many of them are thoughtless, careless and rude!

(Mercersburg,P.A.)

GO BLOW YOURSELVES!

(Pleasant Hill, CA)

People talking on phones, while driving, are worse than drunk drivers!! More often than not, when I notice a driver who is weaving, holding up traffic and/or just generally driving as though they were over-compensating for drinking.....I note that they are talking on the phone. MAKE USING A PHONE, WHILE DRIVING, ILLEGAL. IT CAN'T HAPPEN SOON ENOUGH TO SUIT ME!!!!!

(SAHUARITA)

HAVE ONE BUT ALWAYS PULL OVER & STOP TO USE IT, ILIKE GETTING HOME IN ONE PIECE, LOVED THE ONE WHERE IT ASKED DO YOU TALK ON THE PHONE WHILE HAVING SEX- ENOUGH SAID

(Kingman)

I don't want the government restricting things everytime we turn around. People who cause accidents when using their phone should be dealt with severely, but it shouldn't be illegal to have a phone in your car. A driver needs to pull over, not make the call while moving. How many times have cell phones saved lives while drivers were in accidents or stranded or witnessing a crime or needed help of some kind?

(Denver)

I find it very beneficial to have conversations with people who don't physically sit next to me in a car. I would like to see cell phones integrated with car stereo systems so that you could manage your cell phones with the car stereo controls. I would rather listen to my voice mails than Rush Limbaugh anyday. Why not give innovation a chance rather than try to legislate and obliterate every new situation.

(Tucson, AZ)

To quote one the above respondents, "The accident rate for people using cell phones while driving has been determined to be the same as those who are driving drunk. Enough said!" People with cellphones (and especial those with both) are to involved with their own self-importance (in their eyes). That's why we have answering machines in our homes and offices. It's very rude for these individuals to inflict their private conversations on the rest of us in public. Keep your conversations private! Don't endanger others on the road or inflict your personal matters on those of us in restaurants, stores, and other public places!!!

(Merced, California)

Most people do not need cell phones. They use them for the same reason they would buy an SUV. It has to do with our materialistic, status driven, herd mentality. People should only be allowed to use a cell phone if the car is parked.

()

Columbus, IN, it's because idiots like you are the problem. Too many people who use cell phones in their cars don't pay attention to their driving and cause accidents. We need these regulations to protect others from people like you. Like it or not, this is a country of laws. If you don't like them, then why don't you move to an anarchy like Somalia where there are no laws and not much of anything else? One of these days you will cause an accident that kills or severely injures another driver or pedestrian. Cars are for transportation only. If you don't like that, then don't drive.

()

Do you talk on the phone while having sex?

(Dearborn. MI)

A friend has a cell phone with a stand mounted on the dashboard. This enables both hands to be free to drive.

(Saem MA 01970)

The government should stop trying to regulate people's lives. I agree with the comment listed under the poll screen.

(FREEHOLD NJ)

THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NEVER HAVE LET CELL PHONES IN CARS. TOO DANGEROUS. YOU CAN,T TELL PEOPLE HOW TO DO THINGS.THEY KNOW IT ALL. DON,T TELL ME WHAT TO DO.MANY ADULTS REALLY NEVER GROW UP.

(Green Bay WI)

While I'm not for having regulations on every behavior when the behavior puts others at risk it's time for the law to step in. If all cell phone owners cared enough about the safety of others this law wouldn't be necessary. All it takes is a few to ruin things for everyone enough to not use their phones while driving

(New Rochelle,N,Y.)

The attention of a driver should be strictly on the road and not having a conversation with anyone on a cell phone..They must be banned while driving!!Connie

(Chehalis, Washington)

Have you noticed how rude and emotional the responses are from those who don't want their cell phones taken away from them while they are driving? No wonder the rest of us are sick of their behavior.

()

I think when you cause an accident while using your cell phone you should suffer the inpending law that would happen. Yes there should be very firm and strict laws about using cell phones while driving, I can't count the number of times I've almost been run off the road by someone in another car using a cell phone. If you have to make a call pull off the road in a safe area and talk all you want. NOT WHEN YOUR DRIVING!!!!!!!

(Columbus, IN)

I think the government and "do-gooders" should stay the hell out of our lives...including cell phones. Whatever happened to freedom of choice? Clinton Communism coming to every corner of your life!

(Bettendorf, IA)

There are plenty of places to pull off the road if a cell phone user needs to carry on a conversation and write down messages or information. People need to look at the risks involved and the possible harm that can be done. Driving responsibility is not taken seriously enough in this country. We need much stricter licensing standards and much better police enforcement, similar to that found in European countries.

(Mid-Missouri)

Yes, absolutely. Cell phones should be used for emergencies only. Can't people wait to get home before they get on the phone???? I find it extremely distressing and to be quite honest, troublesome that people leave work, and as soon as they hit that car door, BOOM, they are on the phone not paying attention to their driving. Yes, I have a cell phone, but use it for EMERGENCIES ONLY. I don't have to be on the phone while driving. Statistics show that you are just as likely to be in an accident while driving and talking on a cell phone as you are when you are driving drunk. YES, YES, YES!!!!!!

(Morgantown, WV)

I can't tell you how many times I have almost had an accident due to some fool being preoccupied with a cell phone to their ear!!! It saddens me that people can't be responsible enough to pull off the road when they need to use their phone!! They don't value their own life, so why on earth would we trust them to be responsible when it comes to involving someone elses!!! Regulate!!! We all have to regulate because of the irresponsible ones! It's a law I can LIVE with!! Responsible cell phone user!!!(I pull off the road)

(Columbus, MI)

I have followed too many cars that speed up, then slow down, wander in the other lane, and the drivers have had phones to their ears. You can definitely tell their minds are not on their driving! I have a cell phone, and do not use it while driving.

(Boise, ID)

I have mixed feelings. It strikes me as excessive to totally prohibit the use of cell phones while driving, but if people continue to get injured or killed because of the abuses of some, then piling on the regulations may be necessary. At the very least, for starters it should be considered as a strong grounds for citing people for reckless driving if they're driving badly while on the phone. Also in assigning civil liability for collisions.

Can people do more than one thing at a time -- Yes. But having a cell phone to your ear??? We have a cell phone for emergencies not socializing. But our experience on the road indicates many do not adhere to the other road laws ie, speed, alertness, two hands on the wheel, concentration is low, they sit talking on the phone forgetting to move. They sway in a lane. The 21st century has arrived and new safety precautions must be presented. One solution for communications in vehicles would be the speakerphones installed at purchase of vehicles.

I agree with all that are against cell phones in cars. I have seen the same thing where someone is trying to drive & carry on a conversation with someone on the phone. You can't concentrate on 2 things at the same time when our roads are crowded & some drivers don't have the best driving habits. If you have to talk - pull over & let the rest of us go by. Thank you for your consideration.

While on my way to a doctor appointment today, 4 other drivers and I had to stay away from a car that kept drifting into the lane next to it....it was very unnerving as we were approaching a construction area that has only one lane and needed to merge into the lane this car was drifting into.....when it slowed down for a red light, we could see that the reason for the careless driving manuveurs was that the driver was on a cell phone; laughing and talking and ignoring the rules of the road. This is dangerous to every other driver on the road and should be banned and severly punished. Today there are too many cars on the road and it's difficult enough to deal with that, let alone having to deal with jerks that don't have the common sense to pull over and make their phone calls.

I am over 65, still working as a salesman and love my phone, but I voted to ban its use when driving. Just too risky; just like reading map and trying to drive. If on open road I use headset, or pull over.

I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND WHY ANYBODY WANTS TO CARRY ONE AROUND ANYWAY//I HAVE ENOUGH IN MY POCKETS WITHOUT THAT//I DONT NEED IT OR WANT IT//

They need to be regulated. I've had too many close calls already by people who were too busy talking on their cell phones to pay attention to their driving. I've seen too many people swerving in their car lanes because they were holding the phones with one hand and waving the other around. I've also missed going through green lights because the drivers in front of me were too busy talking on their phones to notice that the signal had changed. They didn't even notice when I honked at them. What do you people who have these devices talk about anyway? Can't you at least wait until you are at home or at your office to talk on the phone? If you must use these devices, why can't you pull over to do it or wait until you are not in heavy traffic? By the way, cell phones are not private. Their signals can be easily picked up by somebody using a scanner. Do you really want your personal conversations being overheard by total strangers? That's why I don't have a cell phone.

Driving is a full tme job. Getting the big picture, giving youself an out, checking the driver behind you, reading you gauges, staying alert and two hands on the wheel. None will allow a full time distraction such as one hand in your ear and lack of consentration.

Why can't cell phones have a built-in recordable chip (like an answering machine), where the user could simply push a button which would tell the caller, "I'm in a place where I cannot take your call, but your number has been recorded, and I will call you back." (Of course, it would have to be equipped with a Caller ID.) And, in restaurants, theaters, etc., the phone could be set to vibrate instead of ring, and the user could then quietly push the above-mentioned button, without disturbing other patrons.

(Great Falls)

I only voted "No" because the question is wrong. If the question had asked if it should be illegal to use a HAND-HELD phone while driving, I would vote an emphatic YES!

(Cortez, Florida)

I would ban cell phones while driving and also in restaurants. Its annoying to hear phone conversation being carried on while trying to enjoy meals. Drivers today need to keep their mind on driving, not what is being said on phones. They should pull over and get off the road if they want to talk on the cell phone.

(Madison)

I think those who wish overregulate should butt out.

()

I was taught in drivers ed that while driving, you should keep both hands on the wheel and your attention on the road at all times. People die in car accidents due to inattention. Why add to an already high death toll.

()

I do not think cell phones should be banned while driving. However, I believe headsets with mics should be required in order to be used by driver while vehicle is in motion.

()

AOL won't let me vote in te poll

()

i do not think they need to be banned, UNLESS you ban EATING while driving and for some chewing gum and driving. if people would just BE FRICKIN' COURTEOUS and get in the right lane, drive slower and talk on their phone, there would be no problems. heck if EVERYONE got in the right lane except to pass there would be very little driving problems, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO people today can be a RUDE as they want and THEN they wonder about ROAD RAGE......sheesh wake up people. JUST BE COURTEOUS and ther would be very little driving problems.....in other words...... GET THE HECK OUT OF THE FAST LANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

()

Id' like to thank USA Weekend for actually posting the results of the ban on ORV's in National Forests Poll. It's about time a media source released the results of an ORV poll. it shosed what most all of them show......70% of Americans do NOT want them banned from our Forests and do NOT support President Clinton's roadless initiative(which was a started as a result of Executive Orders, none the less). Thank you USA Weekend for telling the truth. DR.billZ

()

They are totally uncalled for unless you plan to ban all radios, tape & cd players, eating, applying makeup and even talkative passangers and crying young children or any possible distraction to driving from vehicles. I'm afraid these laws are promoted by jeolous losers who don't have cell phones because no one would waste their time calling these idionts!!!

()

hands free hard wired is perfectly safe why not restrict it to that. most people i've observed don't have a clue as to what's going on around them when they on on the cell phone. for the saftey of others i say restrict

()

The accident rate for people using cell phones while driving has been determined to be the same as those who are driving drunk. Enough said!

()

Sadly, the whole issue comes down once again to pathetic individuals who cannot "multi-task" without putting others at risk. So of course the solution is to punish all in deference to those sad cases. Why not check phone records and if they were talking during an accident punish the offenders- like a democracy is SUPPOSED to work and not like some neo-nazi police state- similar to Adelaide, South Australia where I now live and they have passed this silly law...

()

The phone is not the problem. People are constantly, shaving, putting on makeup, eating, dressing while driving. Do you outlaw Mcdonald's drive thru windows, so people quit eating while driving? If you want to curtail the opportunity for accidents, enforce a law that requires two hands on the wheel while driving, and prevent the insurance companies from paying out claims if your accident happens while you are on the phone or doing something other than paying a

()

how can anyone seriously keep their attention on their driving while talking (and holding) the phone? its a shame they have to be so status oriented rather than safety being their main concern. i quess we need to protect people from themselves in order to protect ourselves.

()

The cell phone is rapidly becoming as dangerous as the "drunk driver". As the law stands now in some venues it's a case of TOO BAD SOMEONE WAS KILLED OR MAIMED BUT NOBODY VIOLATED THE LAW

()

I see people with both cell phones & pagers strapped on their belts...and what I wanna know is WHY?? Doesn't the phone cancel out the pager??? Only a total moron would need both. And there are a lot of morons out there these days...

()

People on phones while driving just look really stupid from behind, but I guess they don't know that. I always get away from these dangerous drivers as FAST as I can! Nothing is so important to talk about on the phone that needs to take your attention away from driving...especially on the highway. I guess people still think talking on a cell phone makes them look important or something. But it really just makes them look dumb & obnoxious. There's a time & place for everything....and cell phones are no exception. I'm glad to see limits are finally being made regarding these evil little gadgets.
