Char (MA)

I've made a couple of online purchases - usually to do w/travel (airline, auto, hotel...'cuz that's where the best deals are!) I only use reputable sites that offer a highlighted secure page & I have had no problems. Like anything else, you must exercise 'consumer caution'! It is the way of the future, although some things just have to be purchased in person. My opinion....

Chuck (Bradenton, FL)

Beware of submitting personal info over the net. Companies large and small collect YOUR personal info to be used for mailings and other applications they see fit. You would be surprised at how much info is out there about each and every one of us whether you use the net or not. Some of this info you would not allow or prefer not to be used for any reason. Sure, there are pro's and con's to using the net for purchases however, be knowledgable and use caution if this is the mode you prefer to shop with. Safeguard yourself against losing your personal freedoms.

Nicole Hays (Spring Lake,North Carolina)

I dont want to shop online in fear of my personal info getting out. it is way too risky these days , with all these physcos~!!! :o

heather s. (middlebury vermont)

noah sucks

Justin W. (Stillwater, Oklahoma)

I have shopped online before buying mainly books and CD's. So far, I have had no trouble using my credit card. I think the risk of using your credit card to purchase things online is the same if you use the telephone. I do some of my shopping via online and the telephone, but mostly I go to the store.

A.D. (WI)

The only way to keep your cc number safe is to never use it, and if you're that paranoid about it, why even have one? Yes, etailers can get your number, but so can the person you call to place your order, or the clerk or waiter who takes your card out of your sight to run it. Online shopping is convenient, often less expensive, and is as secure as any other place you may use your card, possibly more secure than some. And isn't convenience the reason you got a card in the first place?

Charlie Y (Newark, CA.)

I shopped on line one time and junk mails kept coming and that stopped me from shopping on line again.

jenny (salem)

hey, u guys are all wasting your time writing that crap- don't ya think?

Jessica (Tulsa)

I don't take the chance of anyone ever getting my cc number- I don't use it. This baby is for emergency only. Are we so above everything now that it would kill us to walk into a store and (gasp!) PAY CASH ?!

Jeff Volker (Gibson City IL)

Get over it! Internet shopping, "e-commerce", IS here to stay. Give me a secure, encrypted web site over a pimple faced 16 year old check out clerk WITH complete access to my credit card anytime!

Hoot (Cookeville)

Risking your credit card is no more riskier than whether or not you'll get your "purchased" merchandise from the seller -RIGHT? How about the latest scams in the media from the online E-Bay auction?

Fast Eddie (Buhl, MN)

I shop on line. There is no more chance of getting ripped off than anything else. Any of your personal information can be made available to anyone with the right connections. Learn not to be afraid and enjoy life!

Noel "Coach" Baker (Prescott, Az.)

After reading all the statements it makes me wonder if I have missed something. I am retired and $50 seems like a lot of money to me as that was what I made a week a few yrs. ago. I'm not sure I would like to take a chance at losing this but the convenience seems tempting. Someone is always out there looking to get what you have. There have always been "good" guys & "bad" guys.

()

I think it's very simple: If the internet is able to keep my personal information secure then it's worth the risk. If not, then it's not worth the risk. But this question begs the real question: How safe is my personal information when I shop anywhere? From the clerk who takes my card and disappears from sight to "run" my card to the internet, how safe is it? Dan Slayton Flagstaff, AZ

Martin Grumet (Boise, ID)

It often works very well. The new browsers have encryptation that should prevent your credit card number from falling into the wrong hands. Reputable companies will deliver the goods, but buying from a company that has a webpage but no known history in catalog sales can be risky. You should NEVER buy from a spammer. The business that promotes itself by spam might just as well be telling you "We're crooked, and we think you're stupid."

Wm R. Kreitzer (Elliott, IL)

To the Internet user who is afraid to shop on line. Here is how I see it. We have all probably shopped from a catalog. If you have, you have given your card number to someone who could make a copy and then gives it to someone who is in no way connected with this business. A person is either honest or dishonest. So, what¹s the big deal here? All the Internet is, is one big catalog with a whole lot of different departments :-)

Judy (Lyman, SC)

I shop online and love it, since going to the mall with 2 small children is not my idea of fun. Using your credit card number on a secure site is safer than handing your credit card to a waiter who makes minimum wage--how do you KNOW how many copies of your card he makes, there in the back room? I've been shopping online for a year and have never had a problem.

S. E. Parmley (Bismarck, IL)

It is great. We have shopped online many of times. It is easy to find the items that you want there are no lines to wait in, plus it reduces the stress of shopping tremendously. Just use an encrypted site and your card is secure. Also you can start your shopping any time, and finish it in about 3-4 hours.

Mark (Shreveport)

Personally, I shop online about once or twice a month. I have a small limit credit card, and I only shop at well known and respectable "etailers." I hate shopping malls: too many mall walkers and gangs of teenagers wandering aimlessly. I think only fools shop at malls during the holiday season which will be here soon - too much hassle and stress. Also shopping online eliminates a lot of impulse purchasing since I almost always know what I want to buy before I visit the site.

Mary Anne (Little Falls, NJ)

I buy a lot of my clothes in thrift shops and the East Village. The joy of looking at and trying on clothes can never compare to buying online. How boring!!!

Sarah (Denver)

I have never shoped online and i dont ever want to

John (Miami)

Karey from Toronto: I like shopping on-line because I hate shopping! I hate the crowds, screaming children, long lines, and trying to find a place to park. I also am not the least bit overweight. In fact, I'm probably thinner than you are. I prefer getting my exercise elsewhere. Besides, walking around a crowded shopping center at a low speed is not exactly vigorous exercise, especially if you're planning to visit the food court and get fast food there. Stop with your truly ignorant assumption that only overweight people like shopping on-line. Most men hate shopping and will do anything to avoid it. It has nothing to do with weight.

Katie (Alabama)

It might be easier but someone can screw you up for the rest of your life if they get your credit card number.

frank (marysville,mi)

the only problem i have experienced in the 200 or so on-line transactions completed is an incident with SOFT4U.com that was deceptive advertising, thet got caught!

A, Clark (Central Wisconsin)

I do shop online. I like the convenience, and like everyone's saying, you're only liable for the first $50.00, so why not? If you're that worried about it, shop only at sites that are encrypted or secure (there should be a little lock icon in the corner of the order form).

MICHAEL DRISKEL (DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA)

I USE A SMALL LIMIT CREDIT CARD. BUYING FROM KNOWN COMPANIES LIKE OMAHA STEAKS, I HAVE HAD SUPER SERVICE AND QUALITY PRODUCTS DELIVERED TO MY DOOR IN JUST DAYS. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM, AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE BEST FROM THE 6 OR SO COMPANIES FROM WHICH I BUY.

Scott (Circleville, OH)

Greetings. A healthy dose of good old "horse-sense" would do wonders to quell the concerns of those who wish to shop on-line. I have done so numerous times, and with 100% success. Safeguarding your information, along with doing a little research BEFORE ordering, is imperative. Also, there are sites that rate on-line shopping organizations. Thanks.

Rhys (Great Falls)

When you shop in a store, and the clerk "swipes" your card on that little device next to the phone, it goes over the same lines as the Internet uses. So, what's the difference? If someone is determined to steal from you, he/she will find a way. Would you rather be mugged in a mall parking lot or lose fifty bucks (maximum) on a stolen credit card number, or a fraudulent transaction on-line? I love certain parts of the past, too, but we cannot wallow in it! The future starts NOW!

RON STIVERS (GIG HARBOR WASH)

We use a low limit card online so anyone stealing it wont get far or much. Most personal financial information has already been sold many times by your banks.};^)

Sarah (Old Washington)

I think shopping online is helpful. Especially if you are looking for something in particular, or are going on vacation where it's warm and you live where it's cold! I recently came across this since I am going to Florida on the 14 of Nov. I needed a bathing suit and its cold here so you can't find any, unless you go online!

Karey (toronto)

shopping online is just another reason for the 'overweight' portion of our population. things are now specialy designed so that people hardly have to lift a finger. I say, if you're that lazy, you deserve to look like you do. disagree? email me: kay4b@hotmail.com

Rob T (Easton,MD)

There is no more danger in having your card number stolen on line than from the carbons which are thrown away in the stores. In either case, $50 is the maximum you have to pay.

L. C. Sheppard (Tacoma, Washington)

I would shop "on line" if there were a provision for "Lay Away" until the check, money order or credit card number arrives at the vendor's premesis by "conventional means".

Rhys (Great Falls)

"Paranoia strikes deep..." (Crosby, Stills, & Nash). Why is everyone hiding something? A stolen card number costs the holder only $50 at the most, and I really don't give a rat's butt about vendors learning other "personal information" about me. WHAT personal information?!?! The kind of stuff I'm buying? I have no secrets, but those who do should probably shop in malls or buy from street merchants selling from the back of vans with darkened windows.

Sue (Alabama)

I'd rather watch and shop QVC

KK (Binghamton, N.Y.)

I will shop on line because of physical disabilities. It's to hard to get around.

()

What is wrong with most of you? Why are you so afraid? If your credit card gets stolen, big deal! You're only liable for the first fifty dollars charged to your account. If you have lost your card or if you find that someone is making unauthorized charges on your card, THEN CANCEL IT! It only takes a simple phone call. Fifty dollars is not that much money. If you can't afford it, then you really shouldn't have a credit card in the first place because you're living beyond your means. You're so afraid of having your number stolen but don't mind paying all the interest charged by credit card companies. That to me is an example of having something missing upstairs.

pauline McCaffrey (Burlington, Vt)

Being a senior I guess I'm more suspicious than the younger generation. Wouldn't even consider shopping that way. Yes, N.Y.Yankees - all the way.

Terrence Brown (Texarkana, Tx)

Put it this way who in their right mind would shop online???? something is wrong upstairs.

Patty Hubert (St. Augustine)

Shopping On Line is Way Cool. The World is NOT Flat... Need I Say More?

Bob W. (D/FW, TX)

I clearly WILL shop on-line ! Crooks are everywhere ... but, I CHOOSE to live my life OUT LOUD ___ instead of walking in Fear ! The TIME savings alone, would be enough for me, but there is also the convenience of having it delivered to my office and my house ! MY Choice is FREEdom ... not paranoia ! The internet is Creating a bigger Pie ... and I plan to enjoy a share of this new Vista ... and the Future of the way we will do business !

Clint (Ellenboro)

I would never shop on line because of mongrils that could get my credit cord number.

Lesley (FL)

Well guess what? I do like shopping on-line. It saves the hassles of crowded shopping centers, looking for a place to park, and worrying about having your merchandise stolen either from your car or you yourself while you're not looking. Your credit card number CAN be stolen from "dumpster-divers" looking for discarded receipts, "shoulder-surfers", and anybody who is able to steal your purse or wallet. These crimes are far more common than having your credit card number stolen on-line. You can always cancel your credit cards if they get stolen or lost. If you're truly worried about having your credit card numbers stolen, then don't use them. There are other ways to pay for merchandise such as personal checks, money orders, and even cash. Personally, I use money orders. I never use credit cards except in emergencies.

shari swanson (lakewood n.y.)

people can steal your credit card number on line.

Stephen Watson (Asheville NC)

The cyber-scammers are out there, and they use the lastest technology and equipment

Michelle Pierce (New Haven, MI)

Hey there, can I ask you a question? Why? WHY Would any one wanna shop online? I mean honestly it's not only dangerous but it also means you lose the fun of shopping. Trying things on and stashing them behind a rack if you don't like the way it looks, now that's fun!! So all this online shopping frenzy means you sit around gain weight and hope that the items/clothes fit and aren't out of style by the time you get them!

Terrence Brown (Texarkana, TX)

I Say the New York Yankees go all the way, they're going to win this one regardless.

Scott P (Mead, WA)

I will shop on line, but order by phone. There are too many crooks out there who are also hackers that CAN GET YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION.
