Playing a parent in a movie is easier than being an actual parent, according to Mullally, 54, who has plays a smothering mom in The Kings of Summer, a coming-of-age comedy opening May 31. “I love children, but it’s my lot in life that I have not had gigantic dealings with them, except when I was a child myself,” she says. “So I rely on make-believe.” She and her husband, Nick Offerman, who plays a clueless dad in the film, have no offspring.
