    In April, top volunteers and community leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., for the 2013 Make A Difference Day Awards, where 14 outstanding service groups from around the country each received $10,000 for charities.

    Official Rules: Voting for the All-Star Award

    1. Voter Eligibility. Subject to the additional restrictions below, Voting For The Make A Difference Day All-Star Award Honoree is open to U.S. residents (excluding Puerto Rico) who are at least 13 years or older.     Neha Gupta, Yardley, Pa.: Last fall, armed with $5,000 raised through community donations and garage sales and nine volunteers, Neha created a computer center at Philadelphia’s St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

    Make A Difference Day in Larimer County, Colorado engaged thousands of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. These youth volunteers helped with fall harvest activities at a community garden for their project. Photo provided by United Way of Larimer County.

    Nearly 2,800 volunteers took on almost 100 projects and donated 11,000 hours of service.

    More than 1,500 residents of Westport, Conn., took part in the city’s 17th Make A Difference Day.  A total of 19 projects were carried out that day. Among them, these volunteers with Builders Beyond Borders who constructed raised planting beds and laid down wood chips a community farm project .

    In their 17th year of participation, 1,500 residents from this town of 26,000 rallied to help struggling neighbors.

The 5K and a fundraising dinner raised more than $25,000 to offset some of Whitmore’s medical costs as he battles Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

    All-Star: Melbourne (Fla.) Central Catholic High and St. Joseph Catholic School, Palm Bay, Fla.

    In their 15th year of participation, students, parents, teachers and community members united to raise money for a beloved teacher and coach stricken with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

    Neha Gupta distributed toys and created a computer lab at  Philadelphia’s St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children to connect bored, lonely kids to the outside world. Jack Roth, a 3-year-old severely burned in a campfire accident, received one of the toys.

    In her first year of participation, Neha, 16, won an award for creating a library at a needy Philadelphia school.

    In Allen, Texas, Nicholas Cobb (left), recruited volunteers and $800 worth of donated Home Depot supplies to rejuvenate the home of local senior citizen.

    For his fifth Make A Difference Day, Nicholas Cobb, 16, and a dozen VFW and National Honor Society volunteers swooped in with $800 worth of donated Home Depot supplies to spruce up the home of Claudette Allen, 68.
